Overlooking The Valley
*Ventanillas the Otuzco is an archeological site located near the district de los Baños del Inca in Peru. The site is 6 miles away from Lima. The name comes from the shape of the tombs that are on the site which is an ancient burial ground.
There are hundreds of small tombs and they are up to 20 feet deep into the volcanic rock. The tombs are carved into the tomb in a rectangular and circular shape, and this is where the name “ventanillas” or small window is given to them. The main entrance to the catacombs is as tall as 5 feet in height.
Various local legends talk about how the Inca Indians took out the bodies out of the catacombs and stored grains to preserve them. They went on to refurbish the entrances in order to protect the grain from the wind. It is believed that the Inca people kept on carving and dug tunnels that connect the City of Cuzco with the City of Cajamarca.
